Engine submits comments to Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on patent quality

Engine submitted comments to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property following the Subcommittee’s October 30th hearing to consider what Congress can do to prevent the issuance of low-quality patents.

We believe that everyone — from large companies to small startups — benefits from high-quality patents. As Congress examines the patent process, we believe that lawmakers should prioritize patent quality and improve confidence in the U.S. patent system.

“Patent quality is essential to the state of innovation,” we say in our comments. “Startups appreciate the role patents play in protecting inventions, but also know first-hand the devastating impact that low-quality patents and abusive litigation can have. Increasing patent quality will both increase confidence in the entire U.S. patent system and make it harder for bad actors to weaponize patents to the detriment of innovation.”
